Anyone, except a member of the press, is eligible to join a Consumer Technology Association (CTA) standards committee. For members of CTA there is no charge to participate in CTA standards activities. For companies or individuals who are not members of CTA there is an annual fee to participate in CTA standards activities. The annual fee for non-members is described in more detail below. To join a committee, members and non-members alike should email standards@cta.tech and provide their contact information as well as the name(s) of the committee(s) they want to join.
One of the criteria for being a full CTA member is that a company must have at least one office in North America. In contrast, participation in the CTA standards program is not limited by geography. Companies without North American offices are allowed to participate in the CTA standards program. Because of this difference in eligibility requirements there is also a difference in the way fees are calculated. CTA membership fees are based on a company's annual revenue from North America. The non-member fee for participation in the CTA standards program is based on a company's annual worldwide revenue. This difference means that some companies with at least one office in North America might find it is less expensive to become a full CTA member than it is to pay the non-member fee to participate in the CTA standards program. This could particularly be true for large companies that earn only a small percentage of their annual revenue in North America.

Government members are participants that are employed by a government agency or acting on behalf of a government agency as a contractor. Academia members are participants that are employed by colleges and universities or that consult for colleges and universities in the pursuit of research, education, and scholarships. See the first row of the table above for associated fees.
